Towry awards £10,000 National Open Art Competition prize

Towry, the Wealth Adviser, recently presented the Towry first prize in The National Open Art Competition 2011 to David Whittaker of Newquay in Cornwall. His piece, 'The Hovering (Avon)' was described as "a haunting image of a dreamlike state" (photograph of the artwork attached).

David is a self taught artist who has been painting for 20 years. He takes his inspiration from fashion, nature and everyday observations.

Over 2,000 people entered the competition from across the UK, a record number, and the standard and quality of entries was exceptionally high.

The annual competition aims to inspire all artists, young or old, amateur or professional and to widen the public's understanding and appreciation of art.

The Competition, formally known as the Chichester Open Art Exhibition, was first held in 1995 and was originally conceived by the Duke of Richmond.

Andrew Fisher, Chief Executive, Towry, commented:

"Towry is delighted to sponsor the National Open Art Competition and congratulates David Whittaker on his success. The overall level of the artwork submitted this year was of outstanding quality. The competition's aim of supporting excellence and understanding in art is aligned with our own corporate value of delivering the highest quality in wealth advice and investment management services."

Towry has long supported the arts, most recently sponsoring The London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy and hosting an exhibition showcasing a wide range of modern art at their London office to raise funds for Genesis Research Trust, the largest UK-based collection of scientists and clinicians who are researching the causes and cures for conditions that affect the health of women and babies.
